Nearly all parts of the lotus flower are edible, including the flower in bloom, and the root (which is actually a great source of fiber). In certain areas of Japan, lotus flowers grow wild in ponds, living harmoniously alongside Koi fish, ducks and Egrets. Lotus flowers symbolize purity and spiritual promise in Asian cultures. When in bloom, the lotus is a powerful image, tall & stalky, simple yet bold. At this time of year, the lotus flower is withering and going into submission for the cold winter season. Spring or early summer they will be in bloom again, filled with life and promise. As for now, they stand lifeless, patiently waiting for warmer weather.
